Elisabeth Smith, Staff Writer – The Lecanto High School [LHS]’s boys’ and girls’ tennis teams began practice for the new 2018 season, Monday, Jan. 22. The girls will have their first match of the season at 4:30 P.M. Tuesday, Feb.13, at LHS against Springstead. The boys will play their first match at 5:00 P.M. Friday, Feb.16 at Vanguard High School.
Head coach for the boys’ team, Lance Baker, has high hopes for the teams’ new season.
“I look forward to winning districts once again this year, and to seeing both Malik Tahiri and Jackson King [go to] states again,” said Baker.
The new head coach for the girls’ tennis team, Doug Warren, was previously a soccer coach. He feels that the change from soccer to tennis has gone well due to his team’s enthusiasm.
“Transitioning from soccer to tennis has not been that difficult. Most of the girls are self-motivated; they can look at themselves and see what will give them the best chance to win,” said Warren.
Senior Ethan Lasseigne believed that the upcoming season would be even better than last year’s.
“Last year we made it to the regional semi-finals, and we were by far the strongest team in the district. We are returning with four of our top five players. We are all another year experienced, including some members having received experience at the state competition,” said Lasseigne.
Sophomore player Julia Javier is optimistic about this upcoming season.
“I look forward to [seeing] how practices are going to go since we have a new coach. I am most excited to play doubles and hopefully go to states this year,” said Javier.
