English literature teacher Nancy Smith forms bonds with students

Tori Cheney, Staff Writer- There are many teachers and staff members at Lecanto High School [LHS] that work hard everyday to make sure that their students succeed. Many of them do not get nearly as much appreciation as they deserve. English literature teacher Nancy Smith is one example.

Smith has been working in the field of education for 38 years and, of those years, has worked at LHS for four. The International Baccalaureate [IB] program is what drew her to LHS specifically.

“I was tutoring some LHS students, and I could tell from working with them that Lecanto was a school that had a well-run, quality IB program,” said Smith.

Smith is most motivated by her students. She is dedicated and loves to work with them, even going so far as to express that they are her favorite part of waking up and going to work everyday.

“I have met the most memorable students in my 38 year career,” said Smith. “Teaching this senior class for three years has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me.”

Smith has not only been an Advanced Placement [AP] and IB literature teacher, but she also taught chemistry and coached tennis for three years.

“I have taught chemistry, and at the time, I remember thinking, ‘How can electrovalent bonding be more important than knowing how to write a complete sentence?'”said Smith.

Smith has so far enjoyed her time at LHS and has helped many students achieve academic success. She has been an asset to many students and the school as a whole.
