October 23, the Lecanto High School girls’ varsity volleyball team played in the District Championships and won the district title in 5 sets against Crystal River High School.
The girls prepared for this win with loads of practice and tons of determination.
“We have been preparing for this all season. Winning district champs has been one of our main goals as a team,” said senior Olivia Grey.
The first two sets, the Panthers came out victorious with scores of 25-11 and 25-19. In the third and fourth set the Pirates won with scores of 20-25 and 27-29, but the Panthers did not let these victories get to them.
“Winning the first two sets made us feel awesome, but we didn’t let it get our heads just yet. After Crystal River won the next two, I knew we had to step up our game and luckily we did! I always had faith in my team, and I knew we would win,” said senior Jessika Ray.
The girls came out with a bang, winning the final set with a score of 15-12. Winning this title made the team feel like all their hard work has paid off, especially due to the fact that Lecanto has not won this title since 1999.
“It’s gratifying knowing that we won,” said senior Annalee Garcia. “It lets us know that we’ve been putting our time, sweat, tears, laughter, pain. All of our emotions and effort is worth it. It makes us want to keep going.”
Due to the girls winning the title, they now get to play in the Regional Championship as well. The girls feel that if they keep up the hard work, they’ll win that title too.
“I predict if we keep the same attitude we had during districts and the tournament we played against Fivay, then we will be successful,” said junior Taylor Mitchell.
The girls play East River Side High School October 29 at 7 p.m. for the Regional title. Be sure to come out and support your Panthers!
