Halloween is just around the corner, so Lecanto High School students, families, and staff are buying pumpkins to get prepared for the pumpkin carving/decorating contest to benefit LHS’ AVID program.
The pumpkin carving/decorating contest is a creative contest where people can paint, carve, glitter cover, or add amazing decorations to a pumpkin and submit it to AVID teacher Becky Harris. Every student, staff member, or family who is participating needs to buy an entry ticket in the LHS Cafeteria. One entry is $3, two entries is $5, and three entries is $7. Each pumpkin will be judged, and prizes will be given to the winners that show the most school spirit, most creativity, and best overall pumpkin.
Harris feels the fundraiser is important to the AVID program.
“[The purpose of this fundraiser is] to raise money for college visitation trips, college materials, and field days,” said Harris.
Harris not only encourages people to take part of the fund-raiser, but she is helping contribute funds for this event also.
“I love carving [pumpkins], and I too will be entering the competition,” she said.
This year is the first year for the fundraiser, and Harris hopes it will be successful and continue each year.
“This is the first year. Hopefully the competition will develop into a friendly, yearly competition among students, staff, sports/clubs, [and much more],” said Harris.
Around seven people, so far, have entered the pumpkin decorating or carving contest, and all pumpkins must be turned in by Oct. 30, so gather up all your decorations and start making your pumpkins come alive to help the AVID program.
