LHS’ boys’ and girls’ track team had a successful regional competition.
May 4, senior Anna Heinzman and sophomore Matt Giardino will be traveling to Jacksonville to compete at the state competition.
This is Heinzman’s fourth year lettering in pole vaulting and third year going to state. Heinzman holds the record at LHS for pole vault at 11’9”, which she set at the regional meet April 25.
“It was a big day for her and a big day for our school,” said girls’ track coach Robert Thompson.
Giardino is a first-year adaptive track and field athlete. His events include shot put as well as the 200- and 800-meter dashes. He is the very first adaptive athlete at LHS.
Other athletes are listed below for their accomplishments during regionals:
Junior Chloe Benoist advanced to regionals with a career personal record in the 800-meter dash of 2:26.59. Benoist is the third best in LHS’ history.
Senior Mel Thomas competed at regionals with a career personal record in shot put at 32’ 10.5″.
Sophomore Taylor Christian traveled to regionals for her accomplishment in the 100-meter dash, at 12.92 seconds. Christian holds the record for the second fastest athlete for girls in LHS’ history.
Thompson is very proud of his athletes this year.
“Track went great this year; I’m very proud of the kids and their accomplishments. This year has given me a lot to prepare for next season. We have a very talented young team, and I can’t wait until next season, although I will very much miss our seniors,” said Thompson.
