With football season in progress, school spirit is crucial to “pump up” the players for their games. The Lecanto High School Varsity Cheerleading squad helps build up the spirit needed to get the crowd involved in the games.

Head coach Jessica Allnut feels the season is going well and that the squad is stepping their game up by incorporating new dances. Every new dance they perform was created by students on the squad.

“The team went to cheerleading camp this year. We even added a new pyramid to [enhance] our new stunts,” said Allnut.

A huge amount of respect was given to junior Katelyn Hatcher by Allnut when she became captain of the varsity squad, thanks to her fellow teammates.

“Katelyn is the only junior to ever be captain for varsity. She was

elected by the other students on the squad,” Allnut said.

Hatcher has absolutely no fear when it comes to cheering with a crowd of people watching her every move.

“[I feel] like nothing else exists. There is nothing but me and the crowd. I love the feeling of being watched by everyone,” Hatcher explained.

Being that Hatcher is captain, there is a great deal of stress on her to prove that she can be one of the best leaders.

Raising school spirit is no problem according to Allnut. She feels the cheerleaders do a great job.

“Cheerleaders help build up everyone’s spirits, and the team is always in a good mood, for the most part,” said Allnut.
