Collecting lids for a cure

Each month represents a major event, and October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. During this month, Yoplait yogurt is putting pink lids on their yogurt containers to help fund breast cancer research. For each lid code returned to the company, Yoplait will donate 10 cents to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Organization.

At Lecanto High School, front office clerk Claudia O’Steen is collecting these pink lids from students and staff. She started collecting the lids because she felt that it was something that needed to be done.

“[I started] because no one else was,” said O’Steen.

O’Steen also has a personal reason why she has decided to collect the lids; she has lost a close family member to breast cancer. O’Steen’s grandmother battled breast cancer and passed away from the disease.

O’Steen isn’t the only one contributing to her collection; Evelyn Bailey is one of the staff members that helps donate the pink lids to O’Steen’s collection.

“I think it’s a great thing,” said Bailey. “Anything we can do to encourage the company to continue to donate to breast cancer research.”

O’Steen has been collecting the lids for four years, and has her eyes set on collecting many more in years to come.

To donate your pink yogurt lids, just bring them to the front office at LHS.
